ClipPair FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask most. For step-by-step help, see the User guide.

1. What does ClipPair sync?

Text and images, including screenshots and copied photos, between your own Windows PCs and Macs. Copy on one computer and paste on the other. Files and folders are not synced.

2. Does it work on my phone, tablet or Linux?

Not yet. ClipPair runs on Windows PCs and Macs today. On the way, no dates yet: Linux, iPhone, Android. Apple and Google don't let apps read the clipboard in the background, so phone versions will work a little differently.

3. What does it cost?

$9.99, or $7.99 for the first 72 hours after launch, paid once. No subscription and no free trial; instead you get a 14-day refund, no questions asked. You buy it on Gumroad, and your receipt email and Gumroad Library have your license key and the download links.

4. How many computers can I use it on?

As many as you like. Your license key goes on up to 3 computers at a time. Every other computer joins one of those for free, with no key.

5. How do I connect another computer?

On a licensed computer, choose Pair another device… (Windows) or Pair a New Device… (Mac). It shows six words. On the other computer, choose the same item, then Or type words from your other computer, type the six words and click Connect. Both computers show Paired! Enjoy ClipPair :), and your other computers stay connected.

6. Do my computers need to be on the same network?

Yes. ClipPair works between computers on the same local network, not over the internet. If your Wi-Fi blocks discovery, ClipPair remembers your computers' addresses and looks for them on the local network. Guest, hotel and locked-down office networks may still block it.

7. Does my clipboard go to the cloud?

No. Your clipboard goes straight from one of your computers to another, encrypted end to end, and never leaves your network. There is no account. ClipPair goes online only to check your license and for updates, and those checks never include anything you copied. See Privacy.

8. Is it secure?

Only computers that have your six pairing words can connect, and everything they send is encrypted. Keep the words private, like a password. See Security for the details.

9. Does it copy my passwords?

No. When a password manager marks a copy as secret, ClipPair doesn't send it.

10. Does it need the internet?

Only now and then. A licensed computer renews its license in the background about once a week. It keeps working for up to 3 weeks without the internet, then pauses syncing until it can renew. Joined computers follow their licensed computer, with the same 3-week limit.

11. How do I move my license to a new computer?

On the old computer, open Settings → License… and choose Remove license from this computer… (Windows) or Remove License From This Mac… (Mac). Then enter your key on the new computer. If the old computer is gone, email support and we'll free that slot.

12. Is there a clipboard history?

Only if you turn it on. It's off until you choose Turn on history… (Windows) or Turn On History… (Mac) in the History menu. It keeps recent text only, stored encrypted on that computer.

13. How do I pause it, or stop it starting at login?

Choose Pause sync (Windows) or Pause Sync (Mac) in the menu. ClipPair starts at login on a new install; turn that off under Settings → Start at login (Windows) or Settings → Open at Login (Mac).

14. How do updates work?

ClipPair checks for updates when it starts and about once a day. Updates are signed and checked before they install. Installing on its own is off until you turn on Install updates automatically (Windows) or Install Updates Automatically (Mac) in Settings.

15. What if I want a refund?

Email us within 14 days of purchase and you'll get your money back, no questions asked. After a refund the license stops renewing, so syncing pauses within 3 weeks. Nothing is deleted. See the Refund policy.
